Audiences have an imagination and will fill in the gaps if you let them. A testament to the fact that the film industry needs to stop putting realism on such high a pedestal and start understanding that not everything has to be life-like to be entertaining. One things for sure, this is one in a million. I don’t know if they were going for emotionally raw, but it was just off-putting. Jennifer Hudson tried her best, but I was constantly distracted from it by her runny nose. Jason Derulo surprised me by being suitably charismatic and catt-y. However, every time I tried to enjoy it, I actually looked at it and found something new to be visually repulsed by.Įveryone was throwing themselves into this, that’s for sure, and I enjoyed Swift’s number immensely for her enthusiasm. There was some choreography which blew me away in bursts, like Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat’s fantastic tap-dancing and Victoria’s expert ballet dancing. Trying to trick us into thinking they are with half-measures results in the kind of nightmare material we were subjected to here. We know they aren’t real cats- that’s the point of the magic of theatre. It wouldn’t have been hard to dress the actors up in real costumes, by doing what filmmakers have been doing for DECADES and using practical make-up skills, furry legwarmers and avoiding animated tails that wiggle around independently of the actor’s control. ![]() I think what upsets me most about this is that I could actually see a somewhat cheesy but enjoyable performance in among the terrible animation and unnecessary visual effects. The actors don’t shy away from cat behaviour like rubbing on each other and sticking their legs up in the air, and its suitably inappropriately sexual. ![]() When the cats aren’t wearing any clothes, it feels like you’re watching naked people with no genitalia or butthole and a light layer of fur. The way the animated fur blends into their faces is horrific. Since seeing it, I’ve been haunted by images of Ian Mckellen lapping milk up from a bowl, Idris Elba’s furry naked body and Rebel Wilson unzipping her skin like a dress. It was so surreal, so god-awful, so unbelievable that I know it’ll haunt me for the rest of my life. I can honestly say, this film blew me away. Why they chose to adapt this to film is a move I’ll never understand. You could enjoy it for that, if you can sit through two hours of dancing and not get bored, because there basically isn’t a story. Even on stage, watching humans act out cats was uncomfortable, and the only thing it was really made for was to show off some top-class dancing. I would say a tentative yes, as it captured the same surreal, uneasy feel, but they managed to make that aspect of it a thousand times worse.Ĭats was a freaky dance show from the eighties that has absolutely no place where it makes any sort of sense except from in that context. Since the trailers came out, I think all of us have been holding our breaths in anticipation for the moment when it hit cinemas to see if this film manages to capture the spirit of the original show. ![]()
